Londres, fundada en el año 43 AD por los romanos bajo el nombre de Londinium. Aunque hay restos de civilizaciones anteriores, durante la época romana llegó a tener unos 60.000 habitantes que hoy son más de 8 millones. Según el último censo de 2011, los londineses proceden de todas las partes del mundo. De hecho, más de uno de cada cuatro habitantes de la ciudad nacieron fuera de ella. Veremos ahora algunas de sus peculiaridades y cómo es ser Españoles en Londres.
Ahora bien, los países de procedencia más comunes son India, Polonia, Irlanda, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh y Latinoamérica. Aún así, la verdad es que en Londres se encuentra gente de los países más remotos. La ciudad atrae a millones de turistas, estudiantes e inmigrantes. Unos vienen para aprender inglés y otros buscando nuevas oportunidades laborales, o simplemente para disfrutar de la arquitectura, la gente o la cultura anglosajona.
Entonces, el centro Bartlett de análisis avanzado del espacio en colaboración con la Universidad de Cambridge, el museo de arqueología de Londres y Patrimonio Nacional (National Heritage) han creado un mapa interactivo en el que se puede ver la evolución de la ciudad desde sus inicios, como creció durante la época victoriana hasta convertirse en la gran metrópolis que es hoy.
LA DIVERSIDAD DE LONDRES
En efecto, uno de los mayores encantos de Londres es que todas las diferentes etnias viven en armonía. Aunque es cierto que algunas comunidades se concentran en ciertas areas, en la ciudad puedes encontrar productos, restaurantes y actividades culturales de todas partes del mundo. Por ende, tendrás: Chinatown en Soho; Indiatown en Shoreditch; tiendas de productos españoles en Notting Hill; tiendas Kosher (judías) en Golders Green; tiendas de productos polacos y pequeños puestos de frutas tropicales en Brixton.
En suma, cada una de estas comunidades aporta su granito de arena a Londres. Cada una de ellas celebra sus fiestas, ofrece sus productos tradicionales. Todas son respetadas por la ley y por el resto de la ciudad ya que toda esta explosión de diversidad atrae también a muchos turistas que, por ejemplo, no tienen que viajar a Brasil para disfrutar del carnaval. Solo tienen que pasarse por Notting Hill en agosto.
ESPAÑOLES EN LONDRES
Seguramente el destino favorito de muchos españoles que dejan su tierra buscando un futuro mejor es la capital inglesa. Según los datos del consulado, hay unos 80 mil Españoles en Londres registrados. Unos vienen a aprender ingles, otros por trabajo, muchos se van y algunos se quedan. Sin embargo, seguro que todos han tenido que luchar con el idioma y adaptarse a una nueva cultura. Todos los inmigrantes viven aventuras como las de estos chicos que han realizado una webserie sobre las vivencias de los españoles en la gran ciudad.
En resumen, las oportunidades para los españoles abundan en Londres ya que cada vez más gente quiere aprender español. Además, aquellos que vengan a estudiar inglés, tendrán la oportunidad de escuchar los diferentes acentos como por ejemplo el irlandés, el neozelandés o incluso el acento sudafricano.
IGUALDAD Y DIVERSIDAD PROTEGIDA POR LEY
Para terminar, una de las principales razones por las que Londres atrae a gente de todas partes del mundo es por las oportunidades de trabajo que ofrece. Además de semanas laborales de 35 horas, un sistema de seguridad social al alcance de todos y sanidad universal y gratuita, los ingleses se toman muy en serio la política de diversidad e igualdad. En 2010 se aprobó una ley (equality and diversity act). En esta última se prohíbe discriminar a las personas por sexo, raza, edad, estado civil, nacionalidad, incapacidad, religión, o pensamiento.
Como resultado, con esta ley el objetivo es mejorar las relaciones entre las personas, proteger los derechos humanos y reducir la desigualdad entre los diferentes sectores de la sociedad.

THE WORLD IN LONDON
London was founded by the Romans in 43 AD under the name of Londinium. There’s proof of previous civilizations but during the Roman times the city had around 600000 inhabitants, today, they have grown to reach 8 millions. According to the last census made in 2011, Londoners come from all over the world. More than 1 in 4 residents were born outside the city. The most common countries of origin are India, Poland, Ireland, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Latin America but in London , there’s people from the most remote places.
This city also attracts millions of tourists, students and immigrants. They come to learn English, to look for new opportunities or just to admire the architecture, the people or the Anglo-Saxon culture.
The Barlett center (advanced spatial analysis) in partnership with Cambridge University, London Archaeological Museum and the National Heritage Foundation have created an interactive map. There, you can see the evolution of the city since it was founded and how it grew during the Victorian period until it became the huge metropolis that it’s today.
THE DIVERSITY OF LONDON
One of the biggest charms of London is that many ethnic groups live together in harmony. Although there’s some communities concentrated in some specific areas, in the city , one can find products, restaurants and cultural activities from all over the world. We have Chinatown in Soho; Indiatown in Shoredith; Spanish shops in Notting Hill; Kosher (Jewish) shops in Golders Green to Polish shops and stalls with tropical fruits in Brixton.
Each of these communities have something to give to London. All of them celebrate their regional festivals, offer their typical product and they are respected by law and by the other communities. All this diversity attracts lots of tourists who don’t have to travel to Brazil to see the Carnival, they just should go to Notting Hill during August.
SPANIARDS IN LONDON
The favourite place for many Spanish who fled their country looking for a better future is the capital city of the United Kingdom. According to the Spanish consulate in London , there’s around 800000 residents registered. Some come to learn English, others to work. Some of them leave and many others stay but all of them have to struggle with the language and adapt to a new culture. All of them live some experiences similar to the ones that happen to the characters from a new webseries that shows the adventures of a group of Spanish friends in the big city.
There are plenty of opportunities for Spanish people in London as each day more people are willing to learn the language. Furthermore, those who come to learn English can have the chance to listen to other accents like the Irish, New Zealander or South African.
EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY ACT
Other of the biggest attractions of London is their job opportunities. Working week of 35 hours; social security for everyone; healthcare and minimum pay make that the most qualified professionals come to London to work.
For this reason the Government passed a bill in 2010 to promote the diversity and equality in the work. This law states that not public organizations nor private one can discriminate against any person because of gender, race, age, marriage, nationality, pregnancy, disability, religion or belief.
The aim of this law is to promote and improve relationships between citizens, protect the Human Rights and reduce inequality amongst the different sectors of the society.
